According to Hyderabad-based neurologist Dr Sudhir Kumar, growing scientific evidence suggests that carrying too much fat around the abdomen may be linked to memory problems, cognitive decline and even dementia later in life.
In a recent post shared on social media, Dr Kumar highlighted research showing a connection between visceral fat and brain health. He explained that while people often focus on weight for appearance or physical fitness, the type and location of body fat may be just as important, especially when it comes to protecting long-term brain function.
Not all body fat is the same. The fat that lies just under the skin is called subcutaneous fat. While excess amounts can still contribute to health issues, it is generally considered less harmful than visceral fat. Visceral fat is stored deep inside the abdomen and surrounds important organs such as the liver, pancreas and intestines.
According to Dr Kumar, visceral fat is more dangerous because it is biologically active. It releases inflammatory chemicals and hormones that can affect different systems in the body. Over time, these effects may contribute to a range of chronic illnesses and may also influence how the brain functions.
Research has shown that people with higher levels of visceral fat are more likely to experience cognitive decline as they age. Some studies have also linked excessive visceral fat to smaller overall brain volume and reduced size of the hippocampus, a region of the brain that plays a critical role in learning and memory.
The hippocampus helps the brain store and retrieve memories. Changes in this area may affect a person’s ability to remember information, learn new things and process experiences. Scientists believe that the negative effects of visceral fat may begin years before symptoms become obvious.
Dr Kumar noted that the relationship between visceral fat and brain health remains significant even after accounting for factors such as age and overall body weight. This suggests that the location of fat in the body may be an important factor on its own.
Experts believe several biological mechanisms may explain this connection. One major factor is chronic low-grade inflammation. Excess visceral fat can trigger inflammatory responses throughout the body, including the brain. Long-term inflammation has been linked to damage in brain cells and a higher risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
Other contributing factors include insulin resistance, unhealthy cholesterol levels, high blood pressure and damage to small blood vessels. These conditions can affect blood flow to the brain and interfere with its ability to function efficiently. Hormonal changes associated with excess abdominal fat may also play a role in cognitive decline.
Simple steps to protect your brain
The good news is that visceral fat is not a permanent problem. Unlike genetic factors or ageing, it can often be reduced through lifestyle changes. Dr Kumar emphasised that taking action early can help support both physical and mental health in the years ahead.
One of the most effective ways to reduce visceral fat is through regular exercise. Aerobic activities such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling and swimming help burn calories and improve overall fitness. These exercises can also improve blood circulation and support healthy brain function.
Strength training is another important component. Building muscle helps increase metabolism and can make it easier to maintain a healthy weight. Dr Kumar recommends incorporating strength exercises at least twice a week as part of a balanced fitness routine.

Diet also plays a major role. Getting enough protein and fibre can further support weight management and overall health. Protein helps maintain muscle mass, while fibre promotes digestive health and helps people feel full for longer periods, reducing the likelihood of overeating.
Sleep is another factor that should not be overlooked. Adults are generally advised to get between seven and nine hours of quality sleep each night. Poor sleep can affect hormones related to appetite and weight regulation, making it harder to reduce abdominal fat.
Dr Kumar also stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight and monitoring waist size rather than focusing only on the number shown on a weighing scale. He suggested paying attention to waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio, which may provide a better indication of visceral fat levels.
A waist-to-height ratio below 0.5 is often considered a useful target for many adults. This simple measurement can help identify whether excess fat around the abdomen may be posing a health risk.
The neurologist also advised people to be cautious about products marketed as fat-burning supplements. According to him, there is currently no strong scientific evidence showing that such products effectively reduce visceral fat. Sustainable lifestyle changes remain the most reliable approach.
For individuals living with diabetes, prediabetes, high blood pressure or fatty liver disease, reducing visceral fat becomes even more important. These conditions already increase the risk of complications, and excess abdominal fat can further worsen health outcomes.
Dr Kumar believes that protecting brain health should not begin only in old age. The choices people make during adulthood can have a significant impact on memory, thinking abilities and overall cognitive health later in life.
The growing body of research linking visceral fat and brain function highlights an important message: taking care of your waistline may also help take care of your mind. By adopting healthier habits, staying active and making informed lifestyle choices, individuals can reduce visceral fat and potentially lower their risk of future cognitive decline.
